SEO audit checklist: connect search demand, page purpose and evidence.

An audit should produce a prioritised implementation plan, not a folder of scores. Start with the customers and services the site must represent, then test whether search engines can discover, understand and trust the right page.

Build the Search-to-Page Map

Group queries by the decision behind them: learning about a problem, comparing approaches, selecting a service or validating a provider. Avoid creating a page for every wording variation. A page deserves its own URL when it can satisfy a meaningfully distinct need.

Audit layerQuestion to answer
Demand and intentWhich problems and services do real customers search for, and what decision follows?
Page ownershipWhich single page is the best destination for each intent?
DiscoveryCan crawlers reach the page through useful internal links and the intended index controls?
UnderstandingDo the title, H1, copy, anchors and structured information describe the same purpose?
EvidenceDoes the page demonstrate real expertise, scope, limitations, author and relevant proof?
OutcomeCan the visitor take a clear next step, and is that step measured?

Service-Website SEO Audit

  1. Inventory indexable URLs. Record status, canonical, title, description, H1, template, sitemap inclusion and organic purpose.
  2. Map services to distinct intent. Separate materially different buyers—such as setup and migration—without duplicating near-identical pages.
  3. Test crawl and index controls. Check robots, canonicals, redirects, status codes, sitemaps and internal paths.
  4. Review page usefulness. Look for complete answers, original operational detail, accurate limitations and the next decision.
  5. Inspect internal linking. Link important pages from relevant hubs and supporting content with concise, descriptive anchors.
  6. Strengthen identity and proof. Make the responsible expert, business entity, client evidence and source references easy to verify.
  7. Evaluate page experience. Check mobile usability, accessibility, performance, intrusive interruptions and form reliability.
  8. Prioritise and measure. Define the baseline, expected leading indicator, conversion and review date for each material change.

Turn Findings Into a Delivery Queue

Score each finding by affected pages, customer value, severity, confidence and effort. Broken canonicals or inaccessible service pages usually outrank minor copy refinements. Consolidate overlapping recommendations into one testable change with an owner and verification step.

There is no preferred word count.

Expand a page when additional content helps a visitor complete the task. Do not pad pages simply to reach a target length or publish many thin variations to appear comprehensive.

SEO Audit Traps

  • Treating third-party scores as Google's internal ranking data.
  • Building keyword pages that cannot provide distinct value.
  • Changing titles across the whole site without a page-intent map.
  • Reporting rankings without conversions, qualified enquiries or business context.
  • Adding schema that describes content users cannot see.
  • Calling an audit complete before fixes are implemented and verified.
