Build a Campaign Brief That Can Be Tested
Write the objective as an observable action: qualified replies, booked consultations, registrations, purchases or re-engagement. Then define the audience, promise, evidence, call to action, landing destination, exclusions and reporting window.
| Decision | Evidence to record |
|---|---|
| Who should receive it? | Source, consent or lawful basis, expectation, recency and useful segment criteria. |
| Why should they care now? | A concrete problem, outcome or time-sensitive reason—not artificial urgency. |
| What action counts? | The primary conversion and any meaningful assisted action. |
| Can the infrastructure handle it? | Authenticated domain, sending capacity, warm-up state, suppression and complaint controls. |
| When should sending stop? | Complaint, bounce, error or capacity thresholds agreed before launch. |
Pre-Send Checklist
- Confirm the audience. Apply exclusions, suppress opt-outs and invalid addresses, and check the segment size against the plan.
- Verify sender identity. Use an expected From name and address; confirm SPF, DKIM and DMARC alignment for the actual platform.
- Complete the message. Match subject, preview text, body, offer and landing page without misleading gaps.
- Check the required footer. Include accurate identity, contact details and a working, obvious unsubscribe route where required.
- Test the journey. Proof on mobile and desktop, click every link, submit the conversion, verify tracking and inspect a received message.
- Protect deliverability. Review domain health, inbox capacity, expected volume, daily limits and ramp plan.
- Approve the launch. Record the final audience count, sender, version, owner, schedule and stop conditions.
- Plan follow-up. Decide how replies, leads, unsubscribes and non-engagers will be handled before they arrive.
Measure the Outcome, Not Just Opens
Delivery, bounce and complaint data describe campaign health. Clicks and replies show response. Qualified leads, purchases or booked meetings show whether the campaign achieved its purpose. Open data can be incomplete, so avoid treating one headline percentage as the whole result.
If complaints, bounces or delivery errors rise, pause and investigate the audience, authentication and sending pattern before adding volume.
Campaign Failure Patterns
- Starting with a list rather than a defined audience and expectation.
- Using a newly configured sender at full planned volume.
- Changing offer, audience, creative and timing at once, leaving no useful learning.
- Sending to people who already opted out or should have been suppressed.
- Tracking clicks without verifying the landing-page conversion.
- Reporting opens as revenue or qualified demand.
